In Poland, the International Holocaust Remembrance Day is of great significance. During the Second World War, it was on German-occupied Polish territory that Nazi Germany constructed all of its death camps, including the global symbol of the Holocaust – the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. The international community has selected the anniversary of the camp’s liberation to serve as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. [more]

Letter from the Ambassador
2011.09.30

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am appealing to you through our website in a matter which arouses strong emotions not only among the large and active Polish community. From time to time we are shocked to learn from the Canadian media about, "Polish concentration camps." As representatives of a nation affected in a particular fashion by the tragic consequences of World War II, we have the right and indeed the duty to protest against these types of factual errors. We absolutely can not allow for history to be re-written so as to replace the roles of victims with those of executioners.

Against "Polish camps"
2011.09.30

On September 24, 2011, the Globe and Mail published an article entitled, Germany's first war museum since fall of Berlin Wall stirs mixed emotions, within the article the phrase, "Polish concentration camp," was used. The Polish ambassador to Canada, H.E. Zenon Kosiniak-Kamysz, wrote a letter to the editor reminding him that the use of the term, "Polish concentration camp," is not only misleading and highly offensive to all Poles but, "an inaccurate representation of the news and constitutes an unfair and improper presentation of news," as per the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council decision of December 15, 2004.
